Исчисляемые существительные называют отдельные предметы, людей, понятия и т.д., которые могут быть исчислены.
Неисчисляемые существительные называют материалы, вещества, абстрактные качества, группы предметов и иные объекты, которые понимаются как единые и не имеющие четких границ. Различие между исчисляемыми и неисчисляемыми существительными в английском языке проявляется в ряде грамматических свойств:
1) Только исчисляемые существительные могут иметь форму множественного числа и сочетаться с неопределенным артиклем a/an и местоимениями-квантификаторами many, few.
Только неисчисляемые существительные сочетаются с местоимениями-квантификаторами much, little.
2) Не все существительные принадлежат только к классу исчисляемых или неисчисляемых. Многие существительные могут употребляться и как исчисляемые, и как неисчисляемые, часто с изменением значения. В частности:
а) существительное, обозначающее материал, может также обозначать отдельный предмет, сделанный из этого материала, или порцию материала, в этом случае оно употребляется как исчисляемое.

glass — стекло (неисчисляемое сущ.):

The door was made of glass — Дверь была из стекла

glass — стакан (исчисляемое сущ.)

Would you like a glass of water? — Не хотите ли стакан воды?

б) неисчисляемые существительные могут употребляться как исчисляемые, если речь идет о различных видах материала или вещества.

Sparkling wines shall be transparent and without foreign inclusions — Игристые вина должны быть прозрачными и не должны содержать посторонних примесей.

3) Между исчисляемыми и неисчисляемыми существительными в английском и русском языках нет полного соответствия. К существительным, которые являются неисчисляемыми в английском языке, но на русский язык обычно переводятся исчисляемыми существительными, относятся:
advice - совет
knowledge - знание
lightning - молния
news - новость
permission - разрешение
research - исследование
travel - путешествие
work - работа
Для указания на отдельную "часть" неисчисляемых предметов обычно используется слово piece: a piece of information, a piece of advice.
4) С некоторыми неисчисляемыми существительными, в частности, со словами, обозначающими эмоции и умственную деятельность (knowledge, understanding, distrust, education и т.д.), возможно употребление неопределенного артикля a/an, если значение этих слов каким-либо образом ограничивается и уточняется (обычно с помощью прилагательного):

He has a good practical knowledge of British law — Он обладает хорошим практическим знанием британского права.
